The speech and language therapy scholarship fund is being started in memory of Shanzida Akhter.
Shanzida was one of the first ever students in Bangladesh to study towards a bachelor degree in speech and language therapy. This course has been running since 2004 through the Bangladesh Health Professions Institute at the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) and is affiliated with Dhaka University.
The intention for the scholarship fund is to enable a student/ students who would otherwise be unable to afford the full course fees, to be able to study the speech and language therapy course. This is to honour the memory of Shanzida and her hopes and dreams for the development of speech and language therapy in Bangladesh.
Thank you for your interest and support!
Donations to the fund can be made online via the Valerie Taylor Trust using the justgiving .com website http://www.justgiving.com/shanzidascholarshipfund/
We received an email from Rob Whiting and thought that we would share it with you. It gives a great insight of an initial visit to the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed in Bangladesh
“Hi,
I have recently graduated from Vanderbilt University with my bachelor’s degree and am interning at BRAC in Dhaka. I was referred to CRP by Richard Hubbard of the Basic Needs Program, and I visited your center on July 12. Richard told me what a great place and what unique work the center was doing. He raved about Ms. Valerie Taylor. My visit lived up to the hype, and I really enjoyed the extensive tour I was given. I wrote about it on my blog, which I wanted to share with you. The link is here: http://povertyandbusiness.blogspot.com/.
Thanks!
Rob”

The Valerie Taylor Trust has been contacted by ReefTV about a new Programme they are making for BBC1 that involves people raising money for charities and good causes across the UK. Anyone who has seen “Cash in the Attic” will get the idea of this new show.
The team will help people recycle, refurbish and repair the clutter in somebodies home in order to raise money for themselves and a good cause of their choice. Half of the money raised will be for a personal project the other half will be donated to the Valerie Taylor Trust.
The show will help to sell anything and everything that is no longer needed. The team of experts will help to make money by selling items through newspaper ads, local dealers, scrap merchants, salvage yards, auctions and a Garage Sale.
If you know someone whose home is crammed with clutter and would be happy to donate half of the money they raise by selling it to charity I would be extremely grateful if you could get them to call Katie Hobbs on 0207 836 8595 as soon as possible, or email their details her at katie.hobbs@reeftv.com so that she can have a more detailed chat with them about the show.
They will be filming the series throughout January and February and she is trying to find people as soon as possible!
